    Description

This is a spectacular vintage Art Deco 1920s Assuit jacket with hammered silver work creating the geometric pattern. The jacket can be fastened at the front (five traditional snaps - photo detail #10) or left draped open. It is both collectible and wearable.
I originally purchased this at a vintage clothing shop in London in 1994 and wore it once in 1995. (It looked great up on stage in performance lighting!) It has been in storage ever since. Some creases and wrinkles.
Tulle-bi-telli, also known as Assuit or Assiut (after Asyut, in Egypt) is a textile marrying cotton or linen mesh with small strips of metal. The name translates roughly as "net with metal".
Assuit is most often in the form of a shawl, but these shawls were sometimes made into garments, particularly during the 1920s, due to the Egyptian revival which followed the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. I suspect this is the origin of this beautiful piece. Even Barbra Steisand had an Assuit gown made for

This jacket is almost 100 years old! I think it is in VERY GOOD vintage condition, no holes or rips. However, please note that the silver has oxidized over time. The metal might have started out silver but now it has a golden hue to it. The fabric might have started out black but is now almost brown/almost purple/eggplant/mauve/taupe….
(Photos #4, #8 might give an idea of colors)
    Pre-owned vintage condition.
    Total weight: 296 grams
New owner might want to professionally clean and/or press.
